SUBMISSION : it’s a picture taken in the josha tree park in winter 2013. i’m not really a “nature” photographer, i usually shoot urban scenery, but this atmosphere was really emotional. here is my main blog. and for a shorter selection of my photography, you should better check my portfolio here.

Tattooed Goldfish!
This is horrible torture for these fish, which are in fact parrot cichlids, not goldfish. They have to strip the slime coat from the fish (which protects the fish) in order to dye them. More than half of the fish that are tattooed are killed in this process. It’s horrible and I refuse to support this.
Sickening.
This is a horrible practice. I beg you all to never buy a fish that hss been modified in any way! They are beautiful enough on their own.
Never, ever buy tattooed or dye injected fish, guys. Ever. If it’s not a GloFish (which are genetically modified, not dyed) and they aren’t their natural colors or a sort of genetic morph you are aware of, don’t buy it. You only support the demand for fish cruelty.
WOW! It’s a damn fish. They don’t have feelings, or even process pain or discomfort like we do. I’m not going to become an advocate against “fish cruelty” not when my energy would be better spent helping other humans. I can’t even…. Listen I love animals as much as the next person but really? IT’S A FISH! What? are they going to die a whole week sooner than they normally would? Sounds heartless, but why should I care more for a fish than a person? Are we going to start a Save The Fishies group now? Ugh I don’t know why I bother, there probably already is one…
Since your ignorance has robbed me of words, I shall let wiser folk than I answer this…
“Brutality to an animal is cruelty to mankind—it is only the difference in the victim.”
- Alphonse de Lamartine
“It is just like man’s vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.”
- Mark Twain
There is clearly no arguing with people like you. If you want to have an actual debate, pointing out ignorance or lack of intelligence right off the bat is no way to start. Throwing quotes around like you are worldly and knowledgeable doesn’t exactly prove your point either. All it says is that there are people out there who agree with you. I do not. Also, the people you quote should have a little more ethos on the subject, otherwise it is still just an opinion. It is one you may agree with, or is from a famous person, but that doesn’t mean I am wrong. It’s just your opinion. Am I supposed to change my mind because Mark Twain disagreed with me? Not likely.
I understand that these fish may seem important to you but you have to understand that the “fish torture” message may not have the same effect on everyone. I thought it was funny actually. And then urging me to avoid buying these fish just because you think it’s wrong? Lol it actually makes me want to go out and get one. It’s my contrary nature. You are entitled to you opinion even if I think it’s silly. Just like you think I’m an ignorant evil fish hater, so we’re even.
Here since you like to claim the debate highground after your intellectual statement of “WOW! Its a damn fish” let me explain to you all of the reasons why you are wrong. Properly.
“ They don’t have feelings, or even process pain or discomfort like we do”
Fish do feel pain. Just because they can’t scream or otherwise let you know in a way that is familiar to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Experiments have shown time and time again that fish will respond to painful stimuli in a similar manner as any other creature. But don’t take it from me, check out this academic paper published by scholars from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Sciences and Purdue University.
http://www.purdue.edu/uns/x/2009a/090429GarnerPain.htmlSo you started off with a statement of certainty that is in fact unfounded in any truth. The rest of your argument is essentially derailed from there. But I’ll continue anyway.
“ I’m not going to become an advocate against “fish cruelty” not when my energy would be better spent helping other humans.”
Nobody asked you to become an advocate. The request was simply “Do not purchase this product of cruelty.” Your quality of life will not be impacted by not owning a tattooed fish. It can be argued though, that to go out of your way to purchase (Therefore creating a demand for) something that you do not need that requires pain and suffering is cruel. You can spend your time helping other humans while not purchasing these fish. In fact, since it takes a considerable amount of time to care for a fish, with daily feedings and weekly water changes and buying new filters when they break or wear down etc. you would actually have more time to help other humans by not purchasing these fish.“ I can’t even…. Listen I love animals as much as the next person but really? IT’S A FISH! What? are they going to die a whole week sooner than they normally would? Sounds heartless, but why should I care more for a fish than a person? Are we going to start a Save The Fishies group now?”
So since you were trying to have a debate, I should probably start by pointing out the contradiction here. “I love animals” “But its a fish”. So, you do not love animals. Fish are animals and you do not love them enough to care if they undergo a painful and unnecessary procedure that will likely result in their death for the mere purpose of aesthetics (Poor aesthetics at that) so that a person can keep them in a small tank and oggle them. If you did love animals, you would want those fish to live free of unnecessary suffering. But you don’t even care enough to NOT go out of your way to purchase them, in fact, someone pointing out that its a cruel practice makes you WANT to go out of your way to purchase them? So not only do you not love animals, you hate them so much that the mere thought of reducing their suffering makes you want to make them suffer?
This isn’t about them dying a whole week sooner, its about undergoing a painful procedure that could kill them. The thing is, if people were not buying them, there would be no demand, nobody would breed them to be sold, so they wouldn’t be born at all. The populations in their natural habitat could go on just fine without humans breeding them to live in tanks.
So yes, you do sound a little heartless. Nobody is asking you to care more for a fish than a person. Nobody will die if they don’t own these fish, but the fish in fact will die from the procedure or the shortened lifespan due to living in a tank. Its not that difficult of a concept to grasp really. But why are humans inherently more valuable? Because we can destroy natural environments in a way that no other species could dream of? In case its slipped past your notice, our overfishing of the oceans and pollution are about to lead to what is being referred to as the 6th mass extinction. The problem is that this is not a normal mass extinction, its been accelerated and mostly caused by humanity. Mass extinctions are normal when caused by the natural order of things, one type of life dies out because it couldn’t adapt and the better adapted life flourishes. But when this natural equilibrium is shattered, the consequences could be extreme, as our ecosystems rely on a very delicate balance. Ocean life does matter to the equilibrium of the planet, and we are well on our way to destroying it because people can’t live without a filet-o-fish. So you may think it doesn’t matter, but how much do you really care for humans if the consequences come back to haunt us down the road? Will you say “At least I cared for humanity” when we can no longer inhabit the planet? This isn’t a hypothetical. We have destroyed a majority of our old growth forests, polluted the ocean to the point of extinction and polluted our air to a point is hasn’t seen in 400 million years, when our atmosphere was very different and probably wouldn’t have supported human life. But hey, if it makes you feel better on our one way trip to hell, get a tattooed goldfish because fuck it.
